Monica Smart,
Founder & CEO
Hi! I’m Monica. With years of experience working with publicly-held collections in archives and art museums, I understand the importance of preserving our past and the stories within.
I combined my interests in collections management, photography, and memory keeping, I founded SMART Photo Management in 2024.

As a first generation Canadian, growing up in New Brunswick meant that I always lived far from my extended family. Apart from the occasional trip across the Atlantic to visit, my brother and I connected with our relatives, learned about our parents’ childhoods, and revisited our earliest memories by looking at photographs.
While my earliest years were captured in film photos, I received a digital point-and-shoot camera for my 13th birthday. I quickly became that friend who’s always taking pictures and have been backing up and organizing my digital photos since then.
Now as a heritage professional and an amateur photographer I appreciate photographs and memorabilia for their aesthetic qualities as well as for their documentary role as keepers of life’s memories.
I feel fortunate that, years ago, my father invested many hours into scanning slides, prints, and correspondence from his and my mother’s families. Being able to look through early photos helps me feel connected to my extended family and to those who are no longer here, while having my own photographs organized means I can look back on my trips and other events I documented with ease. I want to make it easy for you to look back on special life experiences and remember your loved ones through photos, too.

I studied a bachelor’s degree in Art History (Carleton University, 2017) followed by a graduate certificate in Museum Management and Curatorship (Fleming College, 2019), and completed a distance learning course in Managing Archival Collections (University of Victoria, 2021).
Over the last decade, I’ve worked in heritage interpretation; arts programming; and with collections in municipal and university art galleries, artifacts housed in provincial collections, and records of individuals and families housed in government archives.
I’ve been a professional member of The Photo Managers—”the global leader in training and supporting professionals dedicated to helping individuals, families, and businesses organize, preserve, and share their most cherished memories”—since April 2024.
I currently live and work in my hometown of Fredericton and love road tripping, camping, and exploring Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and New England. I’m constantly snapping images and documenting my life with my mirrorless camera, making sure to back them up, share, and enjoy them, of course!

I had been contemplating offering a local service digitizing photographs, ephemera, and memorabilia (because there’s nothing more satisfying than looking at a flat, high-resolution scan of a physical object on a screen!). I found a secondhand scanner and purchased it.
Later, when I shared my digitization idea with my the instructor of the Scottish country dance classes I was taking, she said she would pay me to digitize her father’s 35 mm slides. After asking myself, “how many others are providing this service near me?” I discovered The Photo Managers and realized that starting a photo organizing business was something I had to do.
